James Laing

The countertenor James Laing has sung at the Royal Opera in London, Early Opera Company, English National Opera, Garsington Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, The Grange Festival, Grange Park Opera, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera. His international engagements have included productions at Den Jyske Opera, the Göttinger Festspiele, the Opéra de Nice, the Semperoper Dresden, Theater Aachen, the Icelandic Opera and the Zurich Opera.


His roles include Apollo (Death in Venice), Endimione (La Calisto), Giuliano (Eliogabalo), Nerillo (L'Ormindo), Fox / Coachman (The Adventures of Pinocchio), The Refugee (Flight), Raphael (Tobias and the Angel), Tolomeo (Giulio Cesare), Medoro (Orlando), Bertarido (Rodelinda), Arsamene (Serse), Zephyrys (Apollo et Hyacinthus), Ascanio (Ascanio in Alba) and Zelim (La verita in cimento).


His concert engagements to date have included performances with the Academy of Ancient Music, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Dunedin Consort, The English Concert, The Hallé, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Orquestra nacionales de España, Nederlandse Bachvereniging, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Royal Northern Sinfonia. His North American engagements have included performances with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Arion Baroque and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.


His recordings include J. S. Bach's Magnificat (Atma Classique CD), The Adventures of Pinocchio (Opus Arte DVD / Blu Ray) and Tobias and the Angel (Chandos CD).
In summer 2023 he created Cake in Jonathan Dove's Itch for Opera Holland Park. His current engagements include Oberon (A Midsummer Night's Dream) at Korea National Opera, Peter (Brothers) at Copenhagen Opera Festival, and Oberon and Tousel Blonde (Masque of Might) at Opera North.
