Born in Milan, he graduated in organ, composition and conducting from the Conservatory of his city. He then specialized in early music at the »Scuola Civica« in Milan. Gianluca Capuano also graduated with honors in theoretical philosophy from the University of Milan. He has performed as a soloist and conductor throughout Europe, the United States, Russia and Japan. In 2006 he founded the period instrument and vocal ensemble »Il canto di Orfeo«, with whom he performs a wide range of baroque repertoire, working together with some of the best players and singers specialized in the historically infromed practice. With his vocal ensemble he also took part in the opera »Teneke« by Vacchi, »Heart of a Dog« by Raskatov and in »Die Soldaten« by Zimmermann at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. In August 2016 Gianluca Capuano gained instant international recognition stepping in at short notice to conduct »Norma« with Cecilia Bartoli for the opening night of the Edinburgh Festival. The great success of that performance led him to conduct a series of performances of the piece, once again with Bartoli in the title role, also in Paris (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées) and Baden Baden. He was then invited to conduct the European tour of Rossini's »Cenerentola« which Cecilia Bartoli brought on tour to Montecarlo, Dortmund, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Versailles and Luxemburg. Other recent engagements include: Vivaldi’s »Catone in Utica« with Concerto Köln at the Cologne Opera; Handel's »Orlando« at Semperoper Dresden,a new production of »Così fan tutte« with OperaLombardia (Como, Brescia and Cremona); »Idomeneo« at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; a new production of »La clemenza di Tito« in Karlsruhe; a new production of »L'incoronazione di Poppea« in Nantes; the double bill »Pigmalione« (Donizetti) / »Che originali!« (Mayr) at the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo; Spontini's »Le metamorfosi di Pasquale« at La Fenice in Venezia (world premiere in modern times); Gassmann's »Gli uccellatori« at the Cologne Opera and »La finta giardiniera« in Zurich. In summer 2017 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival, conducting new productions of »Ariodante« and »La donna del lago«, both with Cecilia Bartoli and Les musiciens du Prince- Monaco. Other recent engagements included: Cimarosa's »Il matrimonio segreto« and Handel’s »Il trionfo del tempo« at the Cologne Opera; »La Finta Giardiniera« at the Zurich Opera; »Weinachtsoratorium« in Hamburg; again »Ariodante« at the Montecarlo Opera; Glucks’»Orfeo ed Euridice« at the Rome Opera; »Alcina« and Caldara’s »La morte di Abel« with Il canto di Orfeo at the Salzburg Festival; »Il matrimonio segreto« at the Dutch National Opera, »Guillaume Tell« at the Choregies d’Orange, »L'elisir d’amore« at Teatro Real Madrid; Mozart’s »Requiem« in Bari.
