Lucia Vonrhein

Lucia Vonrhein is a freelance costume and stage designer and lives in Mainz. She studied at the Fashion and Clothing College in Aschaffenburg and interior design, specialising in scenography and stage design, at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden. During her studies, she had her first exhibitions with her spatial installations at the Museum Rüsselsheim and the Kaserne Basel. She was nominated by the German Design Council in Frankfurt for the German Design Award for outstanding design during her studies. After graduating, she was artist in residence at the OHP 9 gallery in Maastricht with a subsequent exhibition. She lived in the Netherlands for two years as a freelance artist, creating walk-in installations, photographs and video installations. She worked as an assistant in set and stage design at the Babelsberg film studios in Potsdam and on various productions at the Mainz State Theatre. She has worked with costume and stage designers Gianluca Falaschi, Filíppa Elísdóttir, Slavna Martinovic, Julia Kurzweg and Stefan Heyne, among others. Lucia Vonrhein has been working as a freelance stage and costume designer since 2015. She created stage and costume designs for the dance pieces Montreal by Danièle Desnoyers, Object by Garry Stewart, for the 2017 Faust Prize-winning piece Fall Seven Times and for Impetus by Guy Nader and Maria Campos, Much/Less by Giuseppe Spota, Tantalos and Run by Felix Berner as well as the dance evenings HOM and FAM with tanzmainz. She designed the costumes for the dance piece Welcome Everybody by Pierre Rigal in 2023. She collaborated with Alexandra Waierstall for Im Orbit at Staatstheater Mainz, for ANNNA³ at Kunsthalle Bonn and for Bodies and Structures at Tanzhaus NRW. In theatre, she has worked with directors Jana Vetten and Kade Schmidt, developing costume designs for Hamlet, Lenz, Nathan der Weise, Die Physiker, Das Leben ein Traum, Mann ohne Vergangenheit, Platonov and the opera Piraten. Current projects include the choreographies Mysterious Heart by Tania Carvalho, Pink Fraud by Lander Patrick and Follow me by Felix Berner, for which she designed the costumes. She is working on the design of the festival centre for the Herrenhausen Art Festival in Hanover and with Alexandra Waierstall on the costumes for the choreography Momentum at the art museum Dia:Beacon, New York. She will make her debut at the Vienna Volksoper in the 2024/25 season with the costume and stage design for Alessandra Corti’s world premiere Aerea.
