Andreas Heise

Andreas Heise studied Dance at the Palucca University in Dresden, acting and directing in New York, London and Oslo and completed a degree in arts and cultural management at the Leuphana University Lüneburg. He began his career as a dancer in 1998 at the Leipzig Ballet under Uwe Scholz. From 2003, he danced with the Norwegian National Ballet Oslo in numerous leading roles such as Romeo (Romeo and Juliet), Lenski (Onegin), Mitch (A Streetcar Named Desire), Oswald (Ghosts), Albrecht (Giselle) and Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) as well as in pieces by Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe, Sol León & Paul Lightfoot, John Neumeier, Nacho Dato, Christopher Wheeldon, Liam Scarlett, David Dawson and Jorma Elo.

In 2015, Andreas Heise made his choreographic debut in Paul Curran’s production of Benjamin Britten’s Death in Venice at Garsington Opera in England and created the trio Me, Myself and I as part of the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of Palucca University Dresden. Since then, numerous dance pieces have followed, including Orfeo at the Koblenz Theatre in 2017, Der Sandmann with the Graz Ballet in 2018 and in 2019 Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Norwegian National Opera, Lamento for the Stuttgart Ballet and Schubert’s Winterreise at the Festival International de Música in Marvão, Portugal, in cooperation with Bayer Kultur in Leverkusen – a production that has since been performed at numerous venues in Europe as well as in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi at the invitation of the Goethe Institute Pakistan. In 2020, he created the solo Du bist die Ruh for the Staatsballett Berlin’s gala From Berlin with Love, the duet Miss Julie, in 2022, Schubert’s Schwanengesang with the Graz Opera Ballet and the world premiere of Schütz Universum to mark the 350th anniversary of Heinrich Schütz’s death in Dresden’s Trinitatis Church as an interdisciplinary project by the ensemble Auditiv Vokal, the music collective Topograph and dancers. In 2023, M-o(z)art² premiered at the Theatre Vorpommern Greifswald and the community project Love est. 2023 at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. In 2021, Andreas Heise choreographed for the scientific-artistic project Taming Our Trauma, a co-production of Praetorian Non-Profit Art & Health Consulting and Tristan Productions, which was supported by the National Performance Network Stepping Out of the German Federal Government as part of the initiative Neustart Kultur: Förderprogramm Tanz.

Since his choreography for Handel’s Ariodante at the Salzburg Festival in 2017, Andreas Heise has worked closely with director Christof Loy, whose team he was also part of for the productions of Strauss’ Capriccio at the Teatro Real Madrid and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Norwegian National Opera. A production of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, directed by Paul Carr, took Andreas Heise to the Nederlandse Reisopera in 2018.

The staging and choreography of the KaiserRequiem project marks Andreas Heise’s first collaboration with the Vienna State Ballet and his debut at the Vienna Volksoper.
