Stefan Bolliger

Stefan Bolliger was born in Zurich. After engagements at the Thalia Theater Hamburg and as head of lighting at the Schauspiel Stuttgart, he is now a freelance light designer. He designed the lighting for productions by Andreas Kriegenburg in Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Dresden and Tokyo and works regularly with directors such as Tatjana Gürbaca, Jens-Daniel Herzog, Christof Loy, Hans Neuenfels and Michael Thalheimer. Since his debut at the Salzburger Festspiele with his light design for Thalheimer’s production of Büchner’s »Woyzeck« (2003), Handel’s »Theodora« and Strauss’ »Die Frau ohne Schatten« with Loy, Mozart’s »Die Zauberflöte« with Herzog, Shostakovich’s »Lady Macbeth of Mzensk« with Kriegenburg and in 2018 Tchaikovsky's »Queen of Spades« with Neuenfels have followed for the renowned festival. Further engagements have taken Stefan Bolliger to the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg, Aalto Theater Essen, Theater an der Wien, Oper Graz, Landestheater Linz, Theater Basel, Oper Zürich, Gran Teatro Havana and Vlaamse Opera Antwerpen/Gent. At the Vienna State Opera in 2020, he created the light design for Hans Neuenfels’ »Die Entführung aus dem Serail«. After designing the lighting for Martin Schläpfer’s »Swan Lake« at the Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg, Stefan Bolliger is now working with the choreographer for the first time for the world premiere of »In Sonne verwandelt« for the Vienna State Ballet at the Volksoper Wien.
