Bertrand de Billy
Bertrand de Billy returns to the Wiener Staatsoper at the start of the 2020/21 season with a première of Faust and revivals of Don Carlos, Werther, Tosca and Ariadne auf Naxos. At the Bavarian State Opera he is conducting revivals of Les dialogues des Carmelites and Il trittico, and conducting Falstaff at the Nikikai Opera Foundation in Tokyo. Concerts will take him to the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, Orchestre Chambre de Lausanne, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony und Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Engagements have already included the Wiener Staatsoper, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich State Operas, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Grand Théâtre de la Monnaie, Opéra National de Paris, Washington National Opera and Los Angeles Opera. He was a regular guest at New York’s Metropolitan Opera from 1997, and at the Salzburg Festival.from 2002. He is also appearing as a guest with leading orchestras worldwide, such as the Cleveland Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, Orchestre de Paris and Vienna Symphony, Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester, Hamburg Philharmonic, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Dresden Philharmonic, Royal Danish Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, and many others. Bertrand de Billy conducts a wide repertoire from Bach to numerous world premières and premières. He has close links to the Wiener Staatsoper, the Theater an der Wien, the Wiener Musikverein and Wiener Konzerthaus as well as the Bavarian State Opera. Bertrand de Billy was born in Paris, studied there and started as an orchestral musician before quickly moving on to conducting as well. From 1993-95 he was principle conductor and deputy general music director at the Anhaltisches Theater in Dessau, switching to the same position at the Wiener Staatsoper from 1996-98. From 1999-2004 he was principal conductor at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, and from 2002-2010 he was principal conductor of Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. Until December 2015 Bertrand de Billy was principal guest conductors of the Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester, and until 2016/17 he was principal guest conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. From 2015/15 to 2017/18 he was principal guest conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic. His artistic creativity is documented by numerous CD and DVD recordings. Bertrand de Billy has received several prominent awards in France and Austria.
