Tanja Ariane Baumgartner

Tanja Ariane Baumgartner initially studied violin at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, then studied voice in Karlsruhe, Vienna and Sofia. She is one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of our day. Tanja Ariane Baumgartner joined the international élite of dramatic mezzo-sopranos at the latest with her Fricka (»Das Rheingold«, »Die Walküre«) at the 2017 Bayreuth Festival and Lyric Opera Chicago, her fulminating Cassandre (»Les Troyens«) at Oper Frankfurt, and her spectacular début as Ortrud (»Lohengrin«) at Hamburg State Opera. Scheduled productions in 2019/20 included the new production of Henze’s »The Bassarids« as Agaue at the Komische Oper Berlin, Eboli in »Don Carlos«, Maddalena in »Rigoletto« and Brangäne in »Tristan und Isolde« at Oper Frankfurt, Ortrud in »Lohengrin« at Hamburg State Opera, Fricka and Waltraute in »The Ring of the Nibelungs« at Chicago’s Lyric Opera in Chicago, and Kundry in »Parsifal« at Deutsche Oper Berlin. In 2018/19 she sang Clairon in »Capriccio«, Iokaste in »Oedipus Rex«, Preziosilla in »La forza del destino« and Gaea in »Daphne« at Oper Frankfurt. At Zurich Opera she sang Venus in »Tannhäuser«. Tanja Ariane Baumgartner joined the Oper Frankfurt ensemble in 2009/10. Her successes at Frankfurt include Carmen, Cornelia (»Giulio Cesare in Egitto«), Eboli (»Don Carlo«), Gora in the German première of Reimann’s »Medea« (issued on CD by Oehms Classics), The Nurse (»Die Frau ohne Schatten«), Foreign Princess (»Rusalka»), Iokaste (»Oedipe«), Tigrana (Puccini’s »Edgar«), Charlotte (»Werther«), Gaea (»Daphne«) and the title role in Othmar Schoeck’s »Penthesilea«.

Besides her Frankfurt performances, Tanja Ariane Baumgartner made her role début in the 2016/17 season as the Kostelnička (»Jenufa«) with the National Operas of Chile, appeared in 2015/16 as Judith in »Duke Bluebeard’s Castle« in Toulouse, as Clairon in »Capriccio« at the Theater an der Wien, and as Brangäne in »Tristan und Isolde« at Deutsche Oper Berlin. She also made her début in summer 2013 at London’s Royal Opera House as Clairon in Strauss’s »Capriccio« and appeared as a guest artist at the Edinburgh Festival as Judith in Bartok’s one-act »Duke Bluebeard’s Castle«. Tanja Ariane Baumgartner débuted at the Salzburg Festival in 2010 as Countess Geschwitz in »Lulu«, and returned in 2012 as Charlotte in Zimmermann’s »Die Soldaten«.
