»I am completely enraptured by this wonderful, magnificent work and count it among the highest that has ever been created,« Gustav Mahler wrote to the archaeologist Friedrich Löhr in 1886. Halévy's grand opéra quickly and lastingly conquered European opera stages after its premiere in 1835, was banned under National Socialism, and ignored after the Second World War. The State Opera production of La Juive marks a milestone in the history of performance, as the premiere in 1999 led to the rediscovery of this opera for the international repertoire.

For director David Pountney, Jenůfa, despite all its gloom, is an opera of redemption in which the protagonist matures into a human heroine.
For even after numerous blows of fate that befall her in a narrow-minded society, she finds the strength to forgive all those who are to blame for her misfortune.
Asmik Grigorian in the title role is an exceptional phenomenon on stage: an artist who penetrates the roles entrusted to her with the highest intensity and creates characters of breathlessly captivating power.

A genius goldsmith cannot part with his unique works and murders his customers to recover them. Based on a subject by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Paul Hindemith designed an aesthetic reorientation of the opera genre in the 1920s, recalling baroque forms and creating expressive music theatre around the cult of genius and delusion. With Tomasz Konieczny in the title role, Sven-Eric Bechtolf's powerful production returns to the Haus am Ring.

It is without doubt - also - a »tenor opera« that hardly any greats have missed. In Vienna alone: Bergonzi, Bonisolli, Corelli, Di Stefano, Domingo, Carreras, Pavarotti, Botha and many others. Also, of course: Jonas Kaufmann. In 2018, he sang the role of the revolutionary poet here for the first time, who goes to his death together with his lover, the aristocratic Maddalena, during Robespierre's reign of terror. Now Kaufmann is back on the State Opera stage in Umberto Giordano's veristic opera. He is joined by role debutante Maria Agresta as Maddalena and Carlos Álvarez as Carlo Gérard.

Many see in Fidelio - with its apotheotic final jubilation glorifying the ideals of freedom, equality and brotherhood - the freedom opera par excellence. The premiere in 1934 was a triumphant success: Shostakovich's ironic, pointed, but also moving music made both the audience and the press rejoice: the unvarnished, hard story of oppression, devotion and murder was impossible to resist. But Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk also stands for Shostakovich's ordeal, who fell out of favour with Stalin because of this opera: it did not correspond to the political-aesthetic guidelines. After a six-year break, the masterpiece can now be seen again at the Haus am Ring in the impressive State Opera production from 2009 - staged by Matthias Hartmann.
