Margarethe Wallmann's production of Tosca has maintained its attractiveness since 1958 and remains an absolute highlight in the repertoire of the Vienna State Opera. The production gains additional allure from the multitude of renowned artists who have performed in this very direction, with these exact sets and costumes, in memorable performances before the Viennese audience. Continuing this tradition, Anna Netrebko takes on the role of Tosca, Yusif Eyvazov as Cavaradossi, and Wolfgang Koch as Scarpia. Conducting the production is Bertrand de Billy.
Wednesday, 12 July:
La traviata (2021)
Start: 9.27 p.m.
With the opera premiered in 1853, Giuseppe Verdi aimed to defy the conventions and norms of his time. Relentlessly, he exposes the cruelty of a society that indulges in worldly pleasures while sacrificing an innocent woman on the altar of bourgeois morality. Director Simon Stone once again transposes the story into the present, into our digital world. Violetta is an influencer, and her timeline is displayed on a large LED screen, while simultaneously witnessing her public life shattering. The magnificent Pretty Yende takes on the title role, forming the perfect stage couple with Juan Diego Flórez as Alfredo. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts.
