Lorenzo Viotti

In his new position as principal conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dutch National Opera (DNO), Lorenzo Viotti opened the 2021/22 season with Alexander von Zemlinsky's Der Zwerg and Joseph Haydn's Missa in tempore belli. He already made his debut at the DNO in September 2019 with Pagliacci / Cavalleria rusticana.

In addition to numerous concert projects, the new productions of Massenet's Thaïs at Teatro alla Scala and Puccini's Tosca at the DNO were among the highlights of the current season.

Viotti has made a name for himself in recent years as both an opera and concert conductor and has already been able to develop a broad repertoire. He has recently conducted Gounod's Romeo et Juliette (La Scala, Milan), Rigoletto (Stuttgart State Opera and Semperoper Dresden), Werther (Frankfurt Opera and Zurich Opera House), Tosca (Frankfurt Opera and New National Theatre Tokyo), Carmen (Hamburg State Opera and Opéra national de Paris), Die Csárdásfürstin (Zurich Opera House) and Faust (Opéra national de Paris).

Lorenzo Viotti has also worked with many leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in Manchester, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Netherlands Philharmonic, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Gewandhaus-Orchester Leipzig, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Munich Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France in Paris, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Tonkünstler Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London and the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, which Viotti led as principal conductor for three years until the end of August 2021 and where he was also able to attract new audiences through special projects.

For his debuts in the USA with the Cleveland Orchestra and in Canada with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Lorenzo Viotti was highly praised by audiences and the specialist press.

Lorenzo Viotti has won several major conducting competitions, including the Nestlé Young Conductors Award at the 2015 Salzburg Festival, the 11th International Conducting Competition of the Orquestra de Cadaqués and the Conducting Competition at the MDR Symphony Orchestra. In 2017 he received the award for "Newcomer of the Year" at the International Opera Awards in London.

Lorenzo Viotti was born in Lausanne into a French-Italian musical family and has French and Swiss nationality. He studied piano, voice and percussion in Lyon and attended orchestral conducting courses with Professor Georg Mark in Vienna, where he also performed as a percussionist in several major orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic. He continued his conducting training with Nicolás Pasquet at the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Weimar.
