Nicholas Georgiadis
Born in Athens in 1923, the painter and stage designer Nicholas Georgiadis studied architecture, painting and stagecraft in Athens, New York and London. His work included set and costume designs for ballet, opera and drama, as well as for several films. He created numerous set and costume designs for ballets by Kenneth MacMillan for The Royal Ballet London. His long-standing collaboration with Rudolf Nureyev began in 1964 at the Vienna State Opera with »Swan Lake«. Exhibitions of his paintings were held in Venice and London. In 1984 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and in 1999 he was admitted to the Greek Academy of Arts. He was the first set and costume designer to be awarded the London Evening Standard Ballet Award. At the Vienna State Opera, next to »Swan Lake«, his designs for »Sleeping Beauty« (1980), »Raymonda« (1985), »Song of the Earth« (1996), »Mayerling« (2008), »Don Quixote« (2011) and »The Nutcracker« (2012) as well as in 1986 the costume for the solo »Bach Suite« in the choreography of Francine Lancelot and Rudolf Nureyev, which the latter interpreted himself, have been seen to date. Nicholas Georgiadis died in London in 2001.
