Environment & Sustainability

Sustainability is more than just a buzzword for the Vienna State Opera - it is at the heart of our cultural mission. We want to make great art possible while conserving resources, working transparently and remaining fit for the future.

Ecolabel for music theater

  • In December 2024, the Vienna State Opera was awarded the Austrian Ecolabel for Music Theater (UZ 209).

 

Energy & building technology

  • a major milestone was reached in 2025: since November 11, 2025, our new photovoltaic system on the roof has been generating climate-friendly electricity for the building.
  • The gradual switch to LED technology significantly reduces electricity requirements and improves operational safety.

 

Resources & circular economy

  • Together with Wert:Stoff, we check discarded products for recyclable materials and return them to closed loops.

 

Sustainable Opera Ball

  • The next Vienna Opera Ball will be held as a certified green event for the first time - with clear guidelines for catering, decoration, waste and travel.

 

NEST - sustainability in the children's opera

  • NEST - Die Neue Staatsoper im Künstlerhaus is also consistently developing its environmental management. It is currently preparing its own eco-label certification.

 

Arrival & mobility

  • The State Opera is located directly on the subway, streetcar and bus routes. Numerous bicycle stands are available. We welcome everyone who uses climate-friendly mobility.

 

Continuous improvement

  • All important key figures are collected annually and incorporated into concrete measures. Sustainability is a living process for us - in constant exchange with artists, employees and you, our audience.
