Opera Explained

Opera is not a secret, but an experience for all the senses!

You have never attended an opera or ballet performance? Never been to the Vienna State Opera? No problem at all! You definitely don't need to be an expert to enjoy an evening at the opera. All you need is an open mind and a love of music, theater and dance.

What is Opera?

Opera is theater, music and a lot of emotion. It is not complicated. For some, it's like cinema, only with an orchestra, singing and, most importantly, an incomparable "up close and personal" factor.

We offer the interplay of one of the best (if not THE best!) orchestras in the world with outstanding voices, dancers, great conductors, an impressive choir, wonderful costumes, elaborately designed backdrops and the highest level of stage technology precision - in short: a completely new world full of impressions, emotions and a high addiction factor.

"Opera is only for the rich"

Wrong! Opera is for everyone. Seats are available from €15, standing room from €13.

"I don't understand Italian"

It doesn't matter! Every seat has its own subtitle tablet, on which you can choose which language you want them to be displayed in. German, English and the original language of the opera are always included! You can choose from a total of up to 8 languages.

There are also trailers and lots of other information about the content, the music or the production, which can be found on the pages of the respective production.

"I have to come in a tailcoat or evening dress"

No! We don't have a dress code. But many people also use a visit to dress up.

Dress, skirt, shirt, trousers, suit, jacket, sweater - everything is allowed.

Tickets can always be purchased for the current month and the next 2 months. Tickets can be ordered for anything further in the future.

Tickets can be purchased and ordered via our online ticket store, by telephone or at the Bundestheater box offices.

All ticket information

A good (if not the best) seat in the hall depends on your wishes.

Do you want to be close to the action on stage? Then the first rows in the stalls and boxes 1-4 are your best choice!

Do you want a very good view of the stage? Then we recommend the center box, boxes 10-13 or the back rows in the stalls.

Do you just want to listen? The full side of the balcony and the gallery and the 2nd or 3rd row in boxes 1-6 are perfect for listening. We even have specially designated listening seats, which are not only great for listening, but also very easy on the wallet.

However, you get the best value for money for a good view in the middle of the balcony and the gallery, as well as in the 2nd and 3rd row of boxes 10-13.

A special insider tip: our standing tickets for only 13 - 18 €

Standing tickets are exactly what they sound like. But they are also a real insider tip: they only go on sale on the day of the performance, offer a very good view of the stage and cost less than €20!

So if you want to go to the opera spontaneously, you can buy a ticket from 10 am in our online ticket store or from 80 minutes before the start of the performance at our standing room box office.

Our standing room is divided into 3 groups:

  • Parterre standing room: just below the center box and behind the stalls - one of the best views of the stage for just €18
  • Balcony standing room: directly above the boxes for just €13
  • Gallery standing: right at the top and a view over the entire auditorium for just €15

Elegant clothing is not necessary, but of course not forbidden. Dress, skirt, shirt, trousers, suit, jacket, sweater - everything is allowed. Many of our guests like to dress elegantly for a performance, but a simple outfit is also perfectly fine!

However, when choosing your clothes, please bear in mind that you will be in close contact with other guests in the rows of seats.

Further practical information

In the opera house

Opera simply explained

Our cloak rooms are located in several places in the house - if you are sitting in a box, please use the checkroom in your box.

Unlike other houses, our checkrooms are free of charge. We ask you to leave not only your jackets or coats, but also your rucksacks or larger bags.

For security reasons, it is compulsory to leave coats, jackets and bulky items in our checkrooms.

Everything about the checkroom

Our interval buffets are located in our State Rooms, the Gallery, the Box Foyer and the Parterrefoyer. The buffets are not only open during the interval, but also before the performance.

The Café-Bar-Aperitivo is located in the opera foyer by the Bundestheater box office (entrance Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz). It is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm, on performance days until 10:30 pm.

The catering in our house is provided by our catering partner Gerstner gastronomy partner.

All about gastronomy

When can I go to the opera? From 1 hour before the start of the performance. During this time, you can move around the opera house freely, explore the building and take photos.

Please make sure that you are inside before the performance begins. Out of consideration for our guests, there is no late admission. However, if you arrive late for a performance, you can follow the performance in our streaming rooms. After the interval, you can of course take your seat in the auditorium.

Our opera café is open for you outside of performances.

All about how to get there

Our opening hours

Where is box 12? Don't worry! If you need help finding your seat, please ask our audience service!

Our audience service will check your ticket on entry and point you in the direction of your seat. They are usually easy to find in the building and you will recognize them by their black suits with white shirts.

Program booklets for our performances can be purchased either from the Audience Service, in our souvenir store Hamtil & Söhne or online as a digital program booklet.

Our program booklets cost € 7.50 (only cash payment at the Audience Service) or less than € 3 (digital).

The performance

Opera simply explained

At the start of the performance, we ask that all cell phones be switched to flight mode, turned off and stowed away.

Clapping, like cheering, crying and laughing, is clearly allowed and is part of opera - sometimes the emotions take you away!

But when should you clap? That is the question. As a rule, the answer is simple: when everyone else is clapping. This is usually at the end of the performance, at the end of an act or after a particularly successful aria.

But - very important: the applause should always start after the music has finished; interrupting the music is a no-go.

The important thing is to enjoy the evening - that's what everyone wants. A quick question here and there, a smile or a glance at the person sitting next to you is fine, but please try not to disturb other guests during the performance.

Our audience primarily enjoys the music and can become quite strict if disturbed too much.

After the performance

Opera simply explained

The applause is the moment for your cell phone! Photography and filming is expressly permitted here, so don't hesitate!

The soloists often come out from behind the curtain, so the applause can last a very long time - even if it seems to be over, there may be another round. The applause record at our house is over 1 hour - but don't worry: you don't have to stay until the end of the applause.

Unlike with Hollywood stars, it is much easier to get an autograph or photo with the singers, actors, musicians or other participants of the evening after an opera performance. After the performance, almost everyone leaves the building via our stage entrance on Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz, which is located at the back of the building - it is also marked with a "Stage Entrance" sign.

You can usually recognize the stage entrance after the performance by the small crowd that forms in front of it. If you are lucky, you might catch a favorite of the evening and go home not only after a great performance, but also with a great souvenir.

Which opera is good for a first visit?

Of course, this depends entirely on your personal preferences, but experience shows that classical operas are particularly suitable for a first evening at the opera. You will be amazed at how many melodies you know! Whether from movie scenes, music lessons, a TV commercial, sports, ..
For example, the music from George Bizet's opera Carmen is very well known - not least because of its use in the Formula 1 victory ceremony.

Classical operas

Famous stories

  • Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák
(based on Czech fairy tales and Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid)
  • Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck
  • Faust by Charles Gounod (based on Goethe's Faust)

Something to laugh about

Of course, the production also plays a major role. In our repertoire you will find all the works we are currently performing and can read more information about the content, music or staging of each work.
