Sonya Yoncheva
Sonya Yoncheva, recipient of the Opus Klassik 2021 award as "Singer of the Year," is a celebrated figure on the most important stages in the world, including the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London, La Scala in Milan, the Bavarian State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, and the Opéra de Paris. Her unforgettable performances are acclaimed by both critics and audiences alike.
In the 2024/25 season, she will sing, among other roles, in a new production of Dido and Aeneas at the Opéra Royal de Versailles, as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly in Barcelona, as Lisa in Pique Dame at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and in Erwartung as well as Dido and Aeneas in Munich. At the Vienna State Opera, she will be heard in a new production of Iolanta, in the title role of Tosca, and as Maddalena in Andrea Chénier. Numerous additional performances are scheduled, including at the Teatro Cultura Artística in São Paulo, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, in Toulouse, Madrid, Paris, at the Salzburg Mozart Week, the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the Tonhalle in Zurich.
Major roles she has recently performed include Tosca in Tokyo, Yokohama, Berlin, London, Zurich, and Rome, Norma and Cio-Cio-San in Munich, Maddalena and Fedora at La Scala, Norma, Fedora, and Élisabeth de Valois (in Don Carlos) at the Met, Manon Lescaut in Hamburg, Iolanta in Baden-Baden, Norma in Barcelona, Mimì (in La bohème) in Berlin, as well as numerous concert appearances.
The soprano Sonya Yoncheva, born in 1981, studied piano and voice in her hometown of Plovdiv (Bulgaria). She later obtained her master's degree in singing from the Geneva Conservatory. She is also a graduate of William Christie's Academy Le Jardin des Voix, with early music continuing to be a focus of her repertoire. After several solo albums as an exclusive artist with Sony Classical, Sonya Yoncheva's first solo album, The Courtesan, was released in 2023 under her own label, SY11, where her new album GEORGE will also be released at the end of the year. Her discography also includes CD recordings of Le nozze di Figaro (Contessa) for Deutsche Grammophon and Monteverdi's L’incoronazione di Poppea from the Salzburg Festival. Sonya Yoncheva made her debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2013, where she has performed roles including Marguerite (in Faust), Cio-Cio-San (in Madama Butterfly), Juliette (in Roméo et Juliette), and Tosca.
