Nikolaus Habjan
Born in Graz in 1987, Nikolaus Habjan studied music theatre direction at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Already at the age of fifteen, he devoted himself to puppet theatre and perfected the use of hand-puppets under Neville Tranter, which have since become a hallmark of his productions. His first puppet-theatre works were created at the Schubert Theater in Vienna: Der Herr Karl, Freaks, Schlag sie tot, and F. Zawrel – erbbiologisch und sozial minderwertig, the latter awarded the »Nestroy Prize« in 2012.
With his productions combining puppets and actors, Nikolaus Habjan has appeared at the Burgtheater in Vienna (Fool of love – Shakespeare Sonette; Elfriede Jelinek: Schatten – Eurydike sagt; Werner Schwab: Volksvernichtung), at the Volkstheater in Vienna (Gotthold Ephraim Lessing: Nathan der Weise; Christine Lavant: Das Wechselbälgchen; Wien ohne Wiener – Eine Georg Kreisler Revue), at the Rabenhof Theater (6 Österreicher unter den ersten fünf; Kottan ermittelt – Das Puppen-Musical), at the Schauspielhaus Graz (Albert Camus: Das Missverständnis, nominated for the Nestroy Regional Prize in 2016; Paulus Hochgatterer: Böhm, nominated in 2018), at Next Liberty Graz (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: Faust, der Tragödie erster Teil), at the Residenztheater in Munich (Pierre Carlet de Marivaux: Der Streit), at the Bayerische Staatsoper (Carl Maria von Weber: Oberon), at the Schauspielhaus Zürich (Ausschliesslich Inländer – Eine Georg Kreisler Revue), at the Landestheater Niederösterreich in St. Pölten, and at the Theater an der Wien (Carl Maria von Weber: Oberon).
In October 2019 he directed Gounod’s Faust at the Theater an der Wien, followed by Richard Strauss’s Salome in January 2020. Since November 2019, he has appeared on stage at the Schauspielhaus Graz alongside Neville Tranter in The Hills are Alive.
The Austrian premiere of Der Leichenverbrenner by Ladislav Fuks, dramatised by Franzobel and staged by Habjan at the Akademietheater in Vienna, was originally scheduled for March 2020; due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it finally premiered on 8 October 2020. On 10 October 2020, the world premiere of Alles nicht wahr! – ein Georg Kreisler Abend, featuring Nikolaus Habjan and Franui and originally planned for the 2020 Bregenz Festival, took place at the Haus für Mozart in Salzburg, Austria.
Nikolaus Habjan performs nationally and internationally with various musicians – including the ensemble Franui and pianist Ines Schüttengruber – as an actor, whistling artist, and singer. Since 2019 he has taught puppetry at the Institute of Acting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz.
