Nancy Raffa
Nancy Raffa, born in Brooklyn, received her training under Madame Gabriella Darvash. In 1980, she became the youngest and first American female to win the Gold Medal at the prestigious Prix de Lausanne competition in Switzerland. That same year she joined Makarova and Company on Broadway and, at the age of 16, entered the corps de ballet of American Ballet Theatre (ABT). She later danced as principal dancer with Ballet de Santiago, Ballet National Française de Nancy and Miami City Ballet. Throughout her career, she has danced with legends such as Rudolf Nureyev, Patrick Dupond and Fernando Bujones, and worked with leading choreographers including Twyla Tharp, John Neumeier, Hans van Manen, Kenneth MacMillan and George Balanchine.
Her teaching career began as an adjunct faculty member at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, followed by a leading position at the Miami City Ballet School in 1994. Returning to New York in 2005, she became Director of ABT’s Summer Intensive programs, Company Teacher and faculty member of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. In 2007, she was appointed Director of Repertoire at ABT. Since 2009, she has served there as Alexei Ratmansky’s primary assistant on nearly all of his works, including Seven Sonatas, On the Dnieper, Firebird, Shostakovich Trilogy, Songs of Bukovina, Souvenir d’un Lieu Cher, Whipped Cream, The Nutcracker, Seasons and Of Love and Rage. She has also staged Ratmansky’s ballets for leading companies around the world such as Dutch National Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, The Washington Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Texas Ballet Theater, BalletMet and San Francisco Ballet. Furthermore, she has worked extensively with Twyla Tharp, assisting in the workshop of the Tony-nominated Come Fly Away and staging some of her pieces, such as Push Comes to Shove.
Nancy Raffa has judged international competitions, including the 40th Anniversary of the Prix de Lausanne (2012), and remains a sought-after master teacher. In 2019 she was nominated for the Isadora Duncan Dance Award. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Honors Program, and graduated magna cum laude from St. Thomas University in Miami in 2002. She is also a certified Ayurvedic Doctor and a 500-hour Registered Yoga Teacher.
