Julio Bocca
Born in 1967 in Buenos Aires, Julio Bocca began his dance training at the age of four. In 1974, he was admitted to the Instituto Superior de Arte of the Teatro Colón. His international career began in 1985 when he won the gold medal at the 5th International Ballet Competition in Moscow, after which he was engaged as a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. Three years earlier, he had already been a principal dancer with the Fundación Teresa Carreño and the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro.
Julio Bocca has performed with, among others, The Royal Ballet in London, the Cuban National Ballet, as well as the ballet companies of Stuttgart, the Paris Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Bolshoi Theatre, the Mariinsky Theatre, and the Teatro Colón.
In 1990, he founded the Ballet Argentino. Currently, he works as a guest teacher with the English National Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet, the ballet companies of La Scala and the Bolshoi Theatre, as well as at the schools of the Paris Opera, the San Francisco Ballet, and ABT, as well as with ballet companies in Finland, Australia, Houston, Orlando, and at the Korea National University of Arts.
His many honors include the Prix Benois de la Danse, the María Ruanova Award "Primus Inter Pares", the Prix Gino Tani, and the Prix Fernando Bujones (ABT), as well as the Gold Medal of the Kennedy Center and the Delmira Agustini Medal from the Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay. In 1990, he was named Personality of the Year by the French Ministry of Culture and was made Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Julio Bocca is also a member of the International Dance Council CID (UNESCO, Paris) and a cultural ambassador for the MERCOSUR cities. In 2025, he was appointed ballet director of the Teatro Colón.
In the 2025/26 season, Julio Bocca, alongside Alessandra Ferri, will be responsible for the coaching of Elena Tchernichova’s Giselle.
