Guillermo García Calvo

The Spanish conductor Guillermo García Calvo leaded an international career to several important stages such as the Vienna State Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Teatro Real Madrid and New National Theatre Tokio. Born in Madrid, he completed his studies at the University of Music in Vienna. In 2007 he was musical assistant of Christian Thielemann in the restaging of the »Ring des Nibelungen« at the Bayreuth Festival. In 2009 he conducted the premiere of »La Cenerentola« at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he has since then conducted numerous performances. Since 2003 he is closely linked to the Vienna State Opera, where he worked as solo repetiteur and also conducted opera performances (e.g. the premiere of Verdi’s »Macbeth«) and children’s operas. For the Vienna State Ballet, he conducted ballet productions such as »Mayerling«, »The Nutcracker«, »Anna Karenina«, »Swan Lake«, »Onegin«, »Don Quixote«, »Giselle«, »Romeo and Juliet«, »The Snow Queen«, »Peer Gynt« and the Nureyev-Gala in 2022.

In 2017/18 Guillermo García Calvo was appointed general music director of the Chemnitz theatres and chief conductor of the Robert Schumann Philharmonics, where he dedicated himself mainly to the maintenance of the repertoire by Wagner.

The production of the »Götterdämmerung« as part of the new staging of the »Ring des Nibelungen« in Chemnitz conducted by García Calvo was awarded with the German theatre award »Der Faust« in 2019. Furthermore, he is musical director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid since January 2020. For »Siegfried« at the Opera Oviedo he received the prize »Ópera XXI« for the best musical direction in 2017/18, for »La Gioconda« at the Gran Teatre del Liceu the prize of the opera critics of the Amics del Liceu. Further important productions have been »Katiuska« at theTeatro de la Zarzuela Madrid, »L’elisir d’amore« at the New National Theatre in Tokio or »Don Giovanni« at the Opéra National de Paris.

In the current season he is conducting »Aida«, »Das schlaue Füchslein«, »Der Freischütz« and »Wozzeck« in Chemnitz as well as »La Dolores« at the Teatro de la Zarzuela. Guillermo García Calvo returns to the Vienna State Ballet in the 2022/23 season for Frederick Ashton's »La Fille mal gardée«, which he conducts for the first time at the Vienna State Opera.
