Ekaterina Gubanova, one of today’s most celebrated mezzo-sopranos, performs regularly on all major international stages, including the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, the Royal Ballet & Opera in London, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Paris Opéra, the Bavarian and Berlin State Operas, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Real in Madrid, and the Bayreuth Festival.

Closely associated with the works of Wagner and Verdi, her extensive repertoire also includes roles such as Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana), Adalgisa (Norma), Giovanna Seymour (Anna Bolena), Lyubasha (The Tsar’s Bride), Mère Marie (Dialogues des Carmélites), and Marguerite (La damnation de Faust).

Highlights of the 2024/25 season included three new productions: Fricka (Das Rheingold) at the Bavarian State Opera, the Foreign Princess (Rusalka) at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, and Venus at the Vienna State Opera. She also appeared as Eboli (Don Carlos) at the Paris Opéra, and as Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde) and Kundry (Parsifal) at the Bayreuth Festival.

In the previous season she sang Eboli at the Berlin State Opera, Ortrud (Lohengrin) and Herodias (Salome) at the Paris Opéra, Venus at the Met, Santuzza at the Greek National Opera and the Hamburg State Opera, Adalgisa at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, and both Kundry and Venus at the Bayreuth Festival.

Among her most notable engagements are Brangäne at the Paris Opéra, at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, at the Berlin State Opera, and in Tokyo; Fricka in a Ring cycle at La Scala in Milan, and at both the Berlin and Bavarian State Operas; Amneris (Aida) at the Bavarian State Opera, on a Japan tour with La Scala, and at the Chorégies d’Orange; and Venus at the Royal Ballet & Opera, where she also performed as Lyubasha.

At the Metropolitan Opera, she made her debut in Prokofiev’s War and Peace and subsequently sang Giulietta in a new production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Eboli on tour with the ensemble in Japan, Adalgisa, Amneris, and Venus. She has also appeared in three season-opening productions: as Giovanna Seymour in 2012/13, as Brangäne in 2017/18, and as Néris (Medea) in 2023/24.

As a sought-after concert singer, she collaborates regularly with renowned orchestras and conductors. Born in Moscow, she began her musical training as a pianist before studying choral conducting and opera singing at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. She was also a member of the Jette Parker Artists Programme at the Royal Opera & Ballet in London.
