Iain Paterson is one of the most sought-after heldenbaritones of our time. In the 2024/25 season, he appeared as Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) and the Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen) at the Paris Opera, and as Jochanaan (Salome) at the Maggio Musicale in Florence.

He is internationally in demand in roles such as Wotan / Wanderer, the Flying Dutchman, Kurwenal, Amfortas (Parsifal), Jochanaan, Orest, the Forester, and Balstrode (Peter Grimes). Paterson performs at all major international opera houses, including the Vienna, Bavarian, Berlin, and Hamburg State Operas, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, Opéra de Paris, Semperoper, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and in Houston, Leipzig, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Rome, at La Monnaie in Brussels, as well as at the Bayreuth Festival.

He was a member of the ensemble at English National Opera, where he debuted in numerous key roles.

At the BBC Proms, he performed with the Staatskapelle Berlin. Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder took him to the Edinburgh Festival with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He has been repeatedly invited to perform with the Hallé Orchestra.

In Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Paterson has appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, BBC Symphony, and BBC Philharmonic. In Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, he performed with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and at the Edinburgh Festival. With the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, he sang the part of Christ in the St Matthew Passion.

He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Neilson Taylor.
