
Patrick Lange
Patrick Lange studied conducting at the Music Academies in Würzburg and Zurich. In 2005 he was accepted into the support programme »Dirigentenforum« of the German Music Council and appointed assistant conductor of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra by Claudio Abbado, whom he also accompanied to the Berlin Philharmonic, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Orchestra Mozart Bologna. In 2007 Patrick Lange received the European Culture Prize in the category »Promotional Award for Young Conductors« and in 2009 the Eugen Jochum Scholarship of the BR Symphony Orchestra.
He started his career as an opera conductor in Zurich and Lucerne. He made his debut in 2007 with Mozart's »Le nozze di Figaro« at the Komische Oper Berlin, where he was 1st Kapellmeister from 2008 and Chief Conductor from 2010. His interpretation of Wagner's »Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg«, »Rusalka« and »Der Freischütz« received international acclaim. In 2010 Patrick Lange made his debut with Puccini's »Madama Butterfly« at the Vienna State Opera and has been a regular guest there since then. His celebrated debut with Mahler's »Lied von der Erde« in John Neumeier's choreography at the Opéra national de Paris in 2015 was followed by regular re-invitations. Further engagements led Patrick Lange to, among others, the Semperoper Dresden, London’s Covent Garden, the Opera Australia Sydney, the Zurich Opera House, the Canadian Opera Company Toronto, the Korean National Opera Seoul and the opera houses in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Strasbourg. His debut with the Dutch Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in January 2021 with a concert production of Janáček’s »Jenůfa« at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam was followed by further appearances with this orchestra. Another highlight was his debut at the Bavarian State Opera in July 2021 as part of the Munich Opera Festival with Wagner's »Das Rheingold«.
Among the orchestras Patrick Lange has worked with are the Bamberg Symphony, the Essen Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the SWR and WDR Symphony Orchestras and the WDR Funkhaus Orchestra. On tour he conducted the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Vienna RSO and the Bundesjugendorchester. From 2017 to 2022 Patrick Lange was General Music Director of the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden.
He will return to the Vienna State Opera in 2022/23 for the premiere of »Sleeping Beauty« as well as conducting »Die Fledermaus« and the ballet programme »Im siebten Himmel«, whose premiere he had already conducted in 2021. His further projects include Wagner's »Der fliegende Holländer« at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Stravinsky's »The Firebird« and Mahler's »Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen« at the Opéra national de Paris as well as Weber's »Freischütz« at the Theater an der Wien.
