Star soprano Sonya Yoncheva is regarded as one of the leading singers of our time, and regularly appears at the foremost international stages. Her unforgettable portraits of legendary opera roles are lauded by press and public alike. Appearances in new productions in the last three seasons include the title roles of Cherubini’s »Médée«, which opened the season at Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden, »Tosca« at the Metropolitan Opera and »L'incoronazione di Poppea« at the Salzburg Festival, Elisabeth de Valois in »Don Carlos« and Mimì in »La Bohème« at the Opéra national de Paris, Imogene in »Il pirata« at Milan’s La Scala and Madrid’s Teatro Real, and Desdemona in »Otello« at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Yoncheva also sang Mimì at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Desdemona in »Otello«, Mimì and the title roles of »Iolanta« and »Luisa Miller« at the Metropolitan Opera, Desdemona with the Berlin Philharmonic and the title role of »Tosca« at the Berlin State Opera. She has appeared worldwide in solo concerts, recitals and opera galas, for example in Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Milan, Mexico City, Munich, Vienna, Baden-Baden, Geneva, Budapest, Monte Carlo and Santiago de Chile. Further highlights in her career include her celebrated début in the role of »Norma« in a new production at the Royal Opera House, where her appearances also included Antonia in »Tales of Hoffmann«, Micaëla in »Carmen« and Marguerite in »Faust«; Desdemona in the 2015/16 season opening première of »Otello« at the Metropolitan Opera, where she débuted in 2013 as Gilda in »Rigoletto«, Violetta in a new production at Berlin State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Palau de les Arts Valencia, Monte-Carlo and at the Bavarian State Opera; Marguerite in »Faust« at the Wiener Staatsoper and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden; Mimì at Berlin State Opera, the title roles of »Iolanta« and »Lucia di Lammermoor« at the Opéra national de Paris, and Tatiana in »Eugene Onegin« at Deutsche Oper Berlin. She also opened the 2020/2021 season of the Teatro alla Scala in the gala »A riveder le stelle« and was the guest star at the Dresden Advent Concert and of »Christmas with the German President« broadcast by ZDF. Sonya Yoncheva was born in 1981 and studied piano and voice with Nelly Koitcheva in her home town of Plovdiv in Bulgaria, going on to study with Danielle Borst at the Geneva Conservatory of Music. Yoncheva is a graduate of William Christie’s academy Le Jardin des Voix, and has won numerous major international competitions, including Operalia (2010). In 2015 she received an ECHO Klassik award as »Female newcomer of the year«, and in 2019 she received the »Readers’ Award« of the International Opera Awards.
