Renato Girolami

The Italian-born baritone Renato Girolami studied voice in Rome with Guido de Amicis and Sesto Bruscantini, in Munich with Ernst Haefliger, and participated in masterclasses with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin.

His first professional engagements took him to Passau and Salzburg. Shortly thereafter, he became a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera, where he made his debut in 1991 and remained for five years. Since 1996, he has pursued a freelance career, appearing at La Scala in Milan, the Salzburg Festival, the state operas of Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, and Stuttgart, the Zurich Opera, and in Essen, Oslo (Norway), Tokyo (Japan), Naples (Italy), Marseille (France), and Stockholm (Sweden).

He is in high demand for Mozart roles and the bel canto repertoire, but is equally renowned as an interpreter of Verdi and Puccini. Among his most important roles are Leporello (Don Giovanni), Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Dulcamara and Belcore (L’elisir d’amore), Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia), the title roles in Falstaff and Gianni Schicchi, Don Geronio (Il turco in Italia), Melitone (La forza del destino), Germont (La traviata), Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), and Don Magnifico (La cenerentola).
