Iain Paterson

Iain Paterson is one of the most sought-after heroic baritones of our time. 

In the 2021/22 season he will once again take on the role of the Wanderer in Siegfried at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The Bavarian State Opera in Munich has engaged the baritone as Balstrode in Britten's Peter Grimes. The Vienna State Opera presents the artist as Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde. At the Opéra de Paris he will sing Amfortas in a new production of Parsifal and will appear as Holländer at the Wagner Days Leipzig.

Iain Paterson is in international demand as Wotan / Wanderer, Flying Dutchman, Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), Amfortas (Parsifal), Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Gunther (Götterdämmerung), Jochanaan (Salome), Orest (Elektra), Förster (Das schlaue Füchslein) and Balstrode (Peter Grimes).
The artist performs at all international opera houses, such as the Staatsoper Berlin, where he sang Wotan in the Ring under Daniel Barenboim, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Wiener Staatsoper, Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, Lyric Opera Chicago, Houston, Bayerische Staatsoper, Oper Leipzig, Semperoper Dresden, Amsterdam, Rome, La Monnaie Brussels and Frankfurt. He was an ensemble member at the English National Opera and made his debut there in numerous roles such as Gunther, Figaro, Leporello, Colline and Amonasro. He appeared as Leontes in the world premiere of Ryan Wigglesworth's opera The Winter's Tale after William Shakespeare.
At the Bayreuth Festival in recent years, he was acclaimed as Kurwenal in Katharina Wagner's production of Tristan und Isolde under Christian Thielemann. There he also thrilled as Rheingold-Wotan under Marek Janowski. 
The BBC Proms presented Paterson with the Staatskapelle Berlin under Daniel Barenboim. Schoenberg's Gurre-Lieder took him to the Edinburgh Festival with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Donald Runnicles. The Hallé Orchestra has repeatedly invited him for concerts.
In Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Paterson has appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, BBC Symphony and BBC Philharmonic, among others. He appeared in Elgar's Dream of Gerontius with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and at the Edinburgh Festival. With the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic he sang the Christ in the St. Matthew Passion.
Iain Paterson has worked with many of today's leading conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, James Levine, Christian Thielemann, Sir Antonio Pappano, Andris Nelsons, Philippe Jordan, Sir Simon Rattle, Kent Nagano, Christoph von Dohnányi, Vasily Petrenko, Gianandrea Noseda, Edward Gardner and Sir Mark Elder. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Neilson Taylor.
