Axel Kober
Axel Kober’s interpretations in opera and concert are built on a foundation of extensive knowledge, vast experience, and rich musicality, regularly reaching realms of inspiring brilliance. From 2009 to 2024, he served as General Music Director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg, where he made significant contributions across a wide repertoire. Notable productions included Wozzeck, Der Kaiser von Atlantis, Peter Grimes, Castor et Pollux, Kátja Kabanová, the world premiere of Jörg Widmann's Gesicht im Spiegel, Tristan und Isolde, as well as the live CD production of the complete Ring des Nibelungen.
The Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra appointed him its principal conductor in 2017, and he was the orchestra's general music director from 2019 to 2025. Recurring guest conducting engagements have taken him to the Bayreuth Festival, the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, and the Zurich Opera House. Other engagements have taken him to Tokyo, La Scala in Milan, the Opéra National du Rhin, and the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, among others.
In addition to his engagements in Vienna, Axel Kober will return to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Semperoper Dresden, and the Zurich Opera House in the 2025/26 season. On the concert stage, he can be heard with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, and the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, among others. He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2016 with Hänsel und Gretel and has also conducted Der Ring des Nibelungen, Macbeth, Arabella, Der Rosenkavalier, Turandot, Fidelio, Tosca, and Parsifal, among others.
