Maria Bengtsson starts the 2021/22 season as Contessa in Nozze di Figaro at Vienna State Opera, which will present her as well as Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier) and Capriccio-Gräfin. Opéra de Paris will welcome her as Figaro-Gräfin and Covent Garden London has invited the soprano to appear as Ellen Orford in Britten’s Peter Grimes, a role in which she had a triumph at Teatro Real Madrid in the season before. At Komische Oper Berlin Maria Bengtsson will sing a recital. Highlights of recent seasons include Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes) at Teatro Real Madrid and Blanche in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites at Oper Frankfurt, Rusalka as well as Clara in the world premiere of Christian Jost’s Egmont at Theater an der Wien, Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte) at Staatsoper Hamburg and at Teatro San Carlo Napoli with Riccardo Muti conducting, the soprano part in Calixto Bieito’s scenic version of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem at Staatsoper Hamburg and in his scenic interpretation of Mendelssohn’s Elias at Theater an der Wien as well as the title role in the world premiere of Detlev Glanert’s opera Oceane von Detlev Glanert at Deutsche Oper Berlin. Ms. Bengtsson’s most important roles include Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro), Pamina (Zauberflöte), Ilia (Idomeneo), Rusalka as well as the Strauss roles Daphne, Marschallin (Rosenkavalier), Arabella, Capriccio-Gräfin, Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes) and Blanche (Dialogues des Carmélites) a.o.
As a concert and Lieder singer the Swedish soprano has made guest performances at festivals and in concert halls such as the Carinthischer Sommer, Berliner Festspiele, the Konzerthaus and the Musikverein in Vienna, the Gewandhaus Leipzig,the Brucknerhaus Linz, the Klangbogen Festival in Vienna, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Teatro Nacional Sao Carlo in Lisbon, at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and Oper Frankfurt. In addition to that she has performed in concerts with the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo under the baton of Simone Young with Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn with Strauss’ Four Last Songs, at the Konzerthaus Berlin, with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Kirill Petreko in Tel Aviv as well as with the Hamburger Philharmoniker under Bertrand de Billy. Celebrating the inauguration of Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, Ms. Bengtsson was invited to perform Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang under the baton of Thomas Hengelbrock. Ms. Bengtsson studied at the University of Music in Freiburg. From 2000 until 2002, she was an ensemble member of the Volksoper Wien and from 2002 to 2007 of the Komische Oper Berlin where she sang the leading parts in many of Kirill Petrenko’s most important productions. Since 2007, Maria Bengtsson has been active as a freelance artist. She has appeared as a guest at the Opéra de Paris, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Festival in Salzburg and Aix en Provence and at Oper Frankfurt, Opéra National de Bordeaux, Oper Köln, Opéra National de Lyon, Teatro la Fenice, Vlaamse Opera and the Theater an der Wien.
