Thomas Mika

Stage and costume designer Thomas Mika studied opera direction at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg and designed in 2006, at the age of 26, his first piece for the Staatsballett Berlin. The same year, he directed with Bizet’s »Carmen« his first opera for the Ensemble Escritura Hamburg. In 2020 followed his production of Franz Lehár’s »The Count of Luxemburg« for the Estonian National Opera.

The focus of Thomas Mika’s work lies in the field of dance, where he collaborates with contemporary choreographers such as Alejandro Cerrudo, Edward Clug, Marco Goecke, Leo Mujic, Riccardo De Nigris, Kevin O’Day, Tim Plegge, Sergej Vanaev and Jeroen Verbruggen. In the classical repertoire he created new designs for »Onegin« and »Romeo and Juliet« by John Cranko, »Lady of the Camellias« by Derek Deane, »Don Quixote« by Alexey Fadeechev and a version by Nina Ananishvili, »Romeo and Juliet« by Ben van Cauwenbergh, »Swan Lake« by Thomas Edur and a version by Eno Peci and Sabrina Sadowska.

Thomas Mika created his designs for many renowned ballet companies worldwide such as the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris, Bolshoi Ballet Moscow, Stuttgarter Ballett, Staatsballett Berlin, National Ballet of China, Hong Kong Ballet, Universal Ballet Seoul, San Francisco Ballet, Houston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet Seattle, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Ballet X Philadelphia, the National Ballets of Hungary, Poland, Estonia, Slovenia and Croatia, the Novosibirsk State Ballet, Hessisches Staatsballett Wiesbaden, Ballett Mannheim, Aalto Ballett Essen and the Royal Ballet of Flanders.
