
Barrie Kosky
Barrie Kosky has been general manager and principal director of the Komische Oper Berlin since the 2012/2013 season. His work with the Komische Oper Berlin includes »The Magic Flute« (with 1927), with performances attended by over 450,000 people on three continents, »Le Grand Macabre«, »Le nozze di Figaro«, »Iphigénie en Tauride«, »Kiss Me, Kate«, »Rigoletto«, »Rusalka«, »Sieben Songs/Die sieben Todsünden«, Monteverdi’s Venetian Trilogy (»Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria«, »Le nozze d’Enea con Lavinia«, »L’incoronazione di Poppea«), »Ball im Savoy«, »West Side Story«, »Castor et Pollux«, »La belle Hélène«, »Eine Frau, die weiß, was sie will! «, »Moses und Aron«, »The Tales of Hoffmann«, »Eugene Onegin«, »Die Perlen der Cleopatra«, »The Nose«, »The Fair at Sorochyntsi«, »Pelléas et Mélisande«, »Fiddler on the Roof«, »Candide«, »La Bohème« and »The Bassarids«. Engagements have taken Barrie Kosky to the Bavarian State Opera (»Die schweigsame Frau«, »Agrippina« and »The Fiery Angel«), the Opéra National de Paris (»Prince Igor«), the Opéra de Dijon (»Les Boréades«), the Berlin State Opera, London’s Royal Opera House (»The Nose«, »Agrippina« and »Carmen«), Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam (»Armide«), Frankfurt Opera (»Dido and Aeneas«, »Bluebeard’s Castle«, »Carmen« and »Salome«), Los Angeles Opera, English National Opera, the Wiener Staatsoper, Graz Opera, Hannover State Opera, the Finnish National Opera, Aalto Theater Essen, Deutsche Theater Berlin, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Zurich Opera (»La fanciulla del West«, »Die Gezeichneten« and »Macbeth«), Teatro Real Madrid and the Glyndebourne Festival (»Saul«), the Bayreuth Festival, Salzburg Festival (»Orphée aux enfers«), and he is a permanent guest at the Edinburgh International Festival. He received the Deutscher Theaterpreis »Der Faust« in 2009 for his production of »From the House of the Dead«, and the Laurence Olivier Award for his production of »Castor et Pollux« at the English National Opera in 2011. In 2014 he received the International Opera Award in the category »Director of the Year« and in 2016 he was voted »Director of the Year« in a survey of critics by the international »Opernwelt« magazine. »Opernwelt« had already voted the Komische Oper Berlin »Opera house of the year« in the 2012/13 season, and this was followed in 2015 by the International Opera Award in the category »Ensemble of the Year«. In 2018 »Opernwelt« named Barrie Kosky’s production of »The Mastersingers of Nuremberg« at the Bayreuth Festival the »Performance of the Year«. Between 2001 and 2005 Kosky was general director of the Schauspielhaus Wien, and in 1996 he was artistic director of the Adelaide Festival in Australia. His productions have been staged at Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company, the Melbourne Theatre Company, and at international festivals in Sydney and Melbourne. Future engagements include the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Glyndebourne Festival and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.
