Bob Crowley

The multi-award-winning Irish stage and costume designer Bob Crowley can look back on a wide-ranging career in theatre, opera, ballet, film and Broadway productions.
After studying fine art at the Crawford Art School, he moved to England to train in theatre design at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. His breakthrough production was The Duchess of Malfi at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, a huge critical success that resulted in numerous productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre in London. Crowley has also designed extensively for Broadway and the West End such as Mary Poppins for which he won a Tony Award.
In 1987 Bob Crowley made his debut at the Royal Opera House creating designs for The King Goes Forth to France, followed by La traviata and The Knot Garden, among others. He also made the designs for Don Carlos at the Metropolitan Opera New York and The Cunning Little Vixen at the Théâtre du Châtelet.
For The Royal Ballet he has created designs for the 1996 revival of Kenneth MacMillan’s Anastasia. An intensive collaboration developed with the choreographer Christopher Wheeldon for Pavane pour une infante défunteStrapless and the full-length ballets Alice’s Adventures in WonderlandThe Winter’s Tale and Like Water for Chocolate as well as for the musical version of An American in Paris in Paris, London and at the Broadway for which he won a Tony Award.
Furthermore, he has created designs for films and television films including Othello, Tales from Hollywood and Suddenly Last Summer.
Bob Crowley has received seven Tony Awards and numerous Olivier Awards, The Royal Designer for Industry Award and the Robert L.B. Tobin Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatrical Design.
His stage and costume design will be seen for the first time at the Vienna State Opera for Christopher Wheeldonʼs The Winterʼs Tale.
