Michele Mariotti
Michele Mariotti was born in Pesaro. Following his classical studies, he obtained a degree in music composition at the Rossini Conservatoire in Pesaro and a degree in orchestra conducting at the Accademia Musicale Pescarese with full marks and honor under the guidance of Donato Renzetti.
In September 2005 he made his operatic debut conducting Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia in Salerno, Italy. In November 2007 he has conducted Simon Boccanegra for the opening of the season 2007/2008 at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna. Following the success of such production, he was nominated Principal Conductor of Bologna’s Orchestra del Teatro Comunale (from 2008 to 2014) and after that Music Director of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (from 2015 to 2018).
He has conducted at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, at the Teatro Regio in Turin, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, at the Teatro Comunale in Florence, at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, at the Festival Verdi in Parma, at the Sferisterio in Macerata, at the Metropolitan in New York, at the Royal Opera House in London, at the Opéra de Paris, at the Lyric Opera in Chicago, at the Los Angeles Opera, at the Wexford’s Festival and at the Opéra Royale de Wallonie in Liegi, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, at the Bavarian State Opera, at the Salzburg Festival, at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, among others. From 2016 Mariotti has been protagonist, with success, of operas such as I due Foscari at La Scala, La traviata at the Opéra de Paris, Les Huguenots at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semiramide at the Bavarian State Opera. In 2017 he has conducted I due Foscari at the Salzburg Festival, La forza del destino at De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam and Lucia di Lammermoor at the Royal Opera House in London. His 2018 engagements include Orphée et Euridice at La Scala, I Lombardi alla prima crociata at the Teatro Regio in Turin, La donna del lago in Liège, Les Huguenots in Paris. In 2019 he conducted Don Pasquale and La traviata in Paris, I masnadieri in Milan, Semiramide in Pesaro. He debuted at the Opera di Roma with Idomeneo. Among his recent engagements: I masnadieri at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Semiramide (concert version) at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Moreover, he conducted for the first time three Verdi's operas: Aida with the San Carlo di Napoli at Piazza del Plebiscito, Ernani at the Festival Verdi in Parma on the podium of the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, both performed in concert version, and a new production of Falstaff at the Bayerische Staatsoper. In February 2021 he returned to the Paris Opéra to conduct a new production of Aida and afterwards he conducted Luisa Miller (concert version), followed by the return on the podium of the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna. In 2021 he will he will open the Season of the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli conducting for the first time Verdi's Otello.
He was awarded the 36th “Premio Abbiati” by the Associazione Critici Musicali Italiani as Best Conductor of 2016. Starting from the 2022/2023 Season, Michele Mariotti will be the Music Director of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
