Opera Lab & Dance Lab

Participatory children's and youth projects at the Kulturhaus Brotfabrik

Feel opera and ballet, touch them, do it yourself: In our participatory programs, children, teenagers and young adults have the opportunity to experience ballet and musical theater together with professionals from the Vienna State Opera, whether in the city space, at your district. Digitally or on site at the Vienna State Opera. The focus is on your creative ideas, topics that move you and your desire and courage to try something new. Our formats are aimed both at the curious who want to get to know the world of opera and ballet better, and at theater enthusiasts who can't get enough.

Opera Lab

"You always look so stressed!"  Everyone knows them: The young start-up companies with supposedly flat hierarchies, only good vibes and lots of stressed people who always have a lot to do. In The Start Up there are heated discussions, because the sales figures have not been right for a long time. Decisions are made. Resignations are made. The impact these decisions can have on an individual is the starting point for the ensemble's music theater performance.
Inspired by Alban Berg's Wozzeck, the Opera Lab Ensemble, consisting of 19 young people between the ages of 14 and 24, has been developing a piece about financial and emotional dependencies, social structures, toxic relationships and the horrific reality of ongoing femicides in weekly rehearsals since November 2021.

Opening night: June 17, 2022 at 6.30 p.m.
Further performances: June 18, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Dance Lab

Based on the ballet evening Pictures at an Exhibition and Kandinsky's Water Color Study, 30 children between the ages of 7 and 12 developed their own dance evening with a live orchestra. For several months, they trained together, invented movements and put together their own ideas to create flowing choreographies. The musical basis of the performance is two well-known excerpts of Moussorgsky's program music, The Promenade and The Great Gate of Kiev, played by Superar's beginner, woodwind and string orchestra.

The dance lab, the 2b of VS Hebbelplatz , and the children's dance class of Tanz die Toleranz will dance.

Premiere: May 5, 2022, 6 p.m.
at the Ankersaal Kulturhaus Brotfabrik

Project management & scenic installation: Krysztina Winkel.
Dance & Choreography: Katy Geertsen and Katharina Senk
Musical direction: Andy Icochea Icochea

In cooperation with Tanz die Toleranz and Superar.
