Bogdan Roščić took up his position as the new director of the Vienna State Opera on 1 July 2020. His professional career began in the media, where he worked for Austrian newspapers and then at ORF. After moving into the music industry, he became artistic director of Deutsche Grammophon and managing director of Decca Music Group, from where he moved to Sony Classical. An important model for his plans at the Vienna State Opera are the principles of Gustav Mahler: unconditional artistic and creative will, contemporary content, the orientation of all aspects of the operation to the demands of the highest musical as well as theatrical quality, and a constant awareness of the special artistic challenges of a repertory house.
He appointed Philippe Jordan as Music Director, who in recent years has enjoyed great success in the same position at the Opéra de Paris and is one of the central artistic personalities of our time, both as a concert and music theatre conductor.
As the new director of the Staatsballett, Roščić appointed the formative choreographer and then director of the Ballett am Rhein, Martin Schläpfer. Together, they intend to ensure opera and ballet programming that builds on the tradition of the Opera House while meeting the demands of the 21st century, in order to inspire new audiences in addition to longtime loyal visitors.
