»Don Giovanni« and »Falstaff« on »Staatsopern-Mittwoch« at Vienna's Rathausplatz
We are pleased to inform you about further dates for our »Staatsopern-Mittwoch« (i.e. every Wednesday the Vienna State Opera provides the programme) at the Film Festival at Vienna's Rathausplatz.
Wednesday, 16 August:
Don Giovanni (2021)
Wolfgang A. Mozart
Start: 8.45 p.m.
In the 2021 season, director Barrie Kosky launched his DaPonte cycle at the Vienna State Opera with Don Giovanni. In the past season, Le nozze di Figaro was added, and in the upcoming season, the cycle will be completed with Così fan tutte. The production, which stood out not only due to its musical excellence but also thanks to Kosky's brilliant direction and incredibly precise staging, has become an absolute hit with the audience. Under the baton of Philippe Jordan, American bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen sings the role of Don Giovanni, while Philippe Sly portrays Leporello. Kate Lindsey made her international role debut as Donna Elvira at the premiere. There were also role debuts at the opera house, with Stanislas de Barbeyrac as Don Ottavio and Patricia Nolz as Zerlina. Soprano Hanna-Elisabeth Müller returned to the Vienna State Opera as Donna Anna, Ain Anger is singing the role of the Commendatore and Peter Kellner the role of Masetto.
Wednesday, 23 August:
Start: 8.30 p.m.
With his last opera, Giuseppe Verdi, together with his librettist Arrigo Boito, attempted once again the lighthearted genre, a type that Verdi had not touched for about 50 years. The exceptionally talented artistic duo succeeded in creating a new form of musical comedy: a work liberated from conventions, refined in its structure, far from crude farce. The opera concludes with an epochal, colossal fugue, in which the conclusion »everything is folly on Earth« is musically elaborated. Among the performers are Carlos Álvarez, Simon Keenlyside, and Olga Bezsmertna. James Conlon conducts.
