Matinee of the Ballet Academy of the Vienna State Opera
Cast 01.05.2023
Details
Once a year, the students of the Ballet Academy present themselves on the big stage of the Vienna State Opera with an artistic programme that they have been working towards for many months – studying classical roles, experiencing the power and beauty that dancing in the ensemble or the creative work with contemporary choreographers can unfold. The Matinee on 1 May 2023 draws a bow from ballet romanticism with excerpts from August Bournonville’s La Sylphide to the present day.
Fifty students from the lower levels meet for a Unisono that demands homogeneity, musicality and concentration in Hans van Manen’s so masterfully clear movement language. For the Jugendkompanie, Martin Schläpfer has completed his piece Jamie, which he presented a year ago as a work in progress. The Canadian Kinsun Chan, now director of the Tanzcompagnie St. Gallen, has entrusted his youth piece JIT (Just in Time) to the students of the upper levels: a sophisticated, up-to-date play between robotic uniformity and touching humanity.
