Details
Without his Zarzuela past, the singer and musician Plácido Domingo would probably never have existed. It was precisely this special Spanish form of musical theater that awakened his irrepressible love of music at an early age and taught him the ABCs of stage practice: On tours across South America, as a participant in countless zarzuela productions by his parents, he experienced from an early age the excitement before the performance, the exhilarating exchange with the audience, the fulfillment after the curtain falls, but equally the countless major and minor stumbling blocks that can unexpectedly appear behind the scenes, the financial worries that run rampant in the face of a sparsely filled auditorium, the hardships of everyday rehearsals. In this unique atmosphere, which no theoretical lessons at a music institute can even begin to offer, Plácido Domingo was shaped and ennobled into a stage man. Domingo had never before been seen in this genre at the Vienna State Opera, and so the circle seems to close in a very harmonious way when he, in a sense reflecting on his roots, gives his own zarzuela program on this stage he loves so much.
