“…of burning intensity,” is what Die Zeit wrote after the of Manfred Trojahn’s Orest, whilst the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung spoke of “extraordinary density and colourfulness”. Premièred in Amsterdam in 2011, Trojahn’s Orest – with a libretto written by the composer – relates the myth of this murderer of his own mother. It is about coping with guilt and memories, about dealing with the deed, about persecution and liberation. Trojahn packs the outward events and the inner images of Orest with an extraordinarily expressive sound world that impressively describes the divided nature of his existence. Thus Orest is both a refugee and a seeker who – according to Trojahn – makes only one mistake: “He thinks that he can leave his guilt behind him – and only later does he realize that he has to live with this guilt in order to overcome it.”
