As spectacularly as Gioachino Rossini's »Il Barbiere di Siviglia« failed at its premiere in 1816, it was quick to materialise into a worldwide success for the ages, with many a musical number having meshed itself into popular culture even to the general public who has never stepped foot in an opera house. This is owing to Rossini's inexhaustible melodic inventiveness on the one hand and to his musical-dramaturgical flair and very peculiar orchestral treatment on the other, which lends irresistible pull to the essential sections of the score – culminating in the first major finale. In Vienna, this opera has been performed on about a dozen stages so far and has been a fixture in the Vienna State Opera’s repertoire since 1876. The local audience knows the American mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey from her exemplary interpretations of various roles, from Mozart to contemporary opera. Immediately before Nerone in Monteverdi's »L'incoronazione di Poppea« in May and June, she will perform Rosina for the first time on this stage in the four »Barber« performances. French tenor Cyrille Dubois will make his debut in the role of Count Almaviva, who courts her.
