Details

As is customary with Wagner, the conception and creation of what the composer describes as a romantic opera was preceded by reading numerous writings on the mysterious Knight of the Swan. He took it upon himself to address in »Lohengrin«, first performed in 1850 under Franz Liszt, the well-known elements of the saga of the saviour sent out by the Grail, the ban on asking the forbidden question and the dark world of the sorceress Ortrud. Still, »Lohengrin«, as is the case with all of Wagner's operas, cannot be reduced to medieval folklore. Rather, Wagner's aim was to show socio-political utopias of a just world against the backdrop of a story that is part history, part fable. With Sara Jakubiak as Elsa, a singer who has been praised worldwide for her vocal and dramatical style, will present herself to the State Opera audience. Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, on the other hand, made her debut at the Vienna State Opera a few years ago as Brangäne and is now returning for the first time as Ortrud. Without a doubt one of the most important Lohengrin singers at the moment is Klaus Florian Vogt, who can claim a place in history for his interpretation and not least because of his very special, unmistakable timbre.
