»There is no right life in the wrong one,« is one of Adorno's most famous quotes. It applies all too well to Verdi's »Rigoletto«: As a lackey of the careless Duke, court jester Rigoletto becomes the wrongdoer while trying to protect his daughter Gilda from the outside world. But it’s all in vain: All the contriving ends in a catastrophe, Gilda is kidnapped, seduced and finally sacrifices her life for the weak Duke. With his adaptation of Victor Hugo's scandalous »Le Roi s'amuse«, which was banned in France for half a century after only one performance, Verdi succeeded in creating one of his most compelling music theatre designs. The Duke's canzone »La donna è mobile« has gained particular popularity and is familiar to us outside the opera world, even having followed us into television commercials. This catchy tune is an impressive example of Verdi’s mastery as a musical dramatist: For it is exactly this seemingly cheerful moment that is darkest underneath the surface. In the famous quartet of the fourth act that follows, the Duke's reckless flirtation with the seductive Maddalena stands out against the pain felt by a deceived Gilda and the hatred of her father. American bass/baritone Quinn Kelsey will make his debut at the State Opera as Rigoletto in one of his signature roles, Nina Minasyan will also sing at the State Opera for the first time as Gilda.
