The conductor JAMES GAFFIGAN was born in 1979 and studied at La Guardia High School of Music and Art and at the Juilliard School, Preparatory Division. He received his degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, and his Masters of Music in Conducting from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, Houston. James Gaffigan was artistic director of the Summer Festival in the City in San Francisco. James Gaffigan is Principal Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, permanent Guest Conductor at the Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra and at the Gürzenich Orchestra. He has conducted opera at such places as the Aspen Music Festival, Glyndebourne, Houston Opera, Zürich, Hamburg State Opera and at the Norwegian Opera. He has directed, amongst others, Salome, Le nozze di Figaro, La cenerentola, Don Giovanni, La traviata und Falstaff. Current engagements include, amongst others, Don Giovanni in Munich, Le nozze di Figaro in Washington, Così fan tutte in Chicago. He gave his debut performance at the Vienna State Opera in 2011 with Puccini’s La Bohème and has since conducted Mozart’s Don Giovanni here.
