Kangmin Justin Kim

Kangmin Justin Kim was born in South Korea and raised in Chicago. He is a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston (Illinois, USA) and the Royal Academy of Music in London. The singer has established himself as one of the most sought-after young countertenors internationally in just a few years. 

His current engagements include Annio in a new production of La clemenza di Tito and Despina in Così fan tutte at the Hamburg State Opera, Sesto in Giulio Cesare at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, in Luxembourg, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Cologne, Ruggiero in Orlando furioso at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea in Madrid and Barcelona, Idamante in Idomeneo in Krakow, and the Witch in Hänsel und Gretel at the State Theatre Wiesbaden.

In recent years, Kangmin Justin Kim has been seen, among other roles, in the title role of the premiere of M Butterfly at the Santa Fe Opera, as Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel at the Dallas Opera, as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, as Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg, as Annio in La clemenza di Tito at the Theater an der Wien, as Eustazio in Rinaldo and Piacere in Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno at the Lausanne Opera, Idamante at the State Theatre Wiesbaden, and in several productions at the Teatro La Fenice, where he appeared as Ottone in La Griselda, Gilade in Farnace, and Hyacinthus in Apollo et Hyacinthus.

Additionally, he has performed as Nerone and Speranza in L'Orfeo at the Salzburg Festival, at the Paris Philharmonie, the Edinburgh Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Berliner Festspiele, in Chicago, at the New York Lincoln Center, and at the Teatro La Fenice; appeared as Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus and Cesare in Vivaldi's Catone in Utica at the Cologne Opera, made his Glyndebourne debut in Giulio Cesare, performed as Orfeo in Handel's Parnasso in festa at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, made his debut at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in Britten's Canticles, in Carmina Burana with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, as Orlofsky at his Paris debut at the Opéra Comique, as Oreste in La belle Hélène at the Théâtre du Châtelet, as Barzane in Vivaldi's Arsilda in Bratislava, Caen, Lille, Luxembourg, and Versailles, as Speranza at the Opéra de Dijon, as Sesto in La clemenza di Tito at the Opéra de Montpellier, as Idamante in Idomeneo in Gießen, and as Sesto in Giulio Cesare at the Handel Week Festival in Oak Park (USA). 

As a member of the Theater Heidelberg ensemble, he was heard there during the 2015/16 season, among other roles, in the title role of Pym (premiere), as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Romeo in Zingarelli's Giulietta e Romeo, and Enea in Didone abbandonata.

He appeared at the Vienna State Opera in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons in Henze's Das verratene Meer.
