Vienna State Opera - Opera School
Be it Carmen, La bohème or Tosca - the children's choir brings zest to the stage. The Vienna State Opera enables vocally gifted children from the age of 8 to enter the world of opera. On about 100 opera evenings per season, the children of the Opera School are in the spotlight on the big stage: as soloists or as a choir. The street children in Carmen and La bohème, Charlotte's siblings in Werther, altar boys in Tosca, the under-hyped children of Baron Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier and, and, and. Performances outside the opera also enrich the opera school's remit.
How does the opera school work?
In the basic choir (8-10 years), the children receive individual singing lessons in addition to the choir rehearsals, which take place 2x per week. The main tasks of the children's choir in the opera are taken over by the core choir (10-14 years) after the 2nd year of training. The children of the basic choir and the core choir receive weekly scenic lessons in addition to singing lessons. For young people who have outgrown the children's costumes, the Opera School offers a professional platform in the form of the youth choir »OPERAteens«. In addition, »OPERAteens« have the opportunity to participate in the »SoloS« program for the promotion of gifted singers.
The Opera School of the Vienna State Opera organizes an entrance examination at the end of the season. Children between the ages of 8 and 10 who enjoy singing are invited to sign up. To be prepared is a simple song. The entrance examination is for the basic choir of the Opera School, for entry from the beginning of the new season.
