Ballet School of the Vienna State Opera
The origins of this school go back to 1771 when Jean Georges Noverre founded the "Theatrical-dance school". In the 19th century a school was connected to the Kärntnertortheater. In 1870 the Ballet School of the k.k. Hofoperntheaters was formalized and lessons took place in the House on the Ring. In 1980 the Ballet School occupied its own premises in Hanuschhof in Goethegasse. |

Since 2005 Gyula Harangozó has been Artistic Director. Jolantha Seyfried, former principal solo dancer of the Vienna State Opera Ballet and bearer of the Fanny Elssler Ring, has been Head Mistress of the Ballet School of the Vienna State Opera since 1st of February, 2004.
The Ballet School is divided into 3 preparation classes, 8 ballet classes and 1 practical theatre class.
Beginning with the 1st ballet class pupils also attend high school with a focus on artistic disciplines and, while taking dance lessons, live in the HIB (boarding school) in the Börhaavegasse, 1030 Vienna (until the age of 18 after the school-leaving exam).
The pupils participate in ballet and opera performances of the Vienna State Opera.
Disciplines taught
Classical dance, pas de deux, repertoire, modern dance, interpretation / improvisation, jazz dance / dance rhythmics, character dance, Wiesenthal technology, historical dance, rhythmics, stretching / placement, anatomical, theory.

From Monday to Friday: for the upper stage in the morning (5th to 8th class), for the junior grades and preparation classes in the afternoon (2nd to 4th first-class elementary school and 1st to 4th first-class high school).
Entrance examinations for the Ballet School
For children between the ages of 7 and 10 examinations are offered every school year in November, March and May in the Ballet School of the Vienna State Opera, 1010 Vienna, Goethegasse 1 (Hanuschhof).
Entrance examinations in March 2006: for children from
4th first-class elementary school;
Entrance examinations in May 2006: for children of the 2nd und 3rd first-class elementary school;
Expenses
Depending of the school level, from € 15,- to € 75,- per teaching month.
