Background information Vienna’s opera house on the Ring is without doubt one of the world’s leading opera houses. Built in 1869 to plans by the architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, and reopened in 1955 after its destruction in the Second World War, the house offers international audiences exciting music theatre of a superb standard some 300 days of the year. Night after night, the most popular artists delight audiences, accompanied by the world’s best opera orchestra (the orchestra from which the Vienna Philharmonic recruits its members). Notable personalities like Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Felix Weingartner, Clemens Krauss, Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel and Claudio Abbado are just some of the directors who have shaped the destiny of this house. The enormous repertoire spans several centu-ries, with around 70 different works on the programme each year. In 1999 it was expanded to include productions specially for children and youngsters in the mobilkomm austria children’s opera marquee. The auditorium is actually horseshoe-shaped, and has a total of 1,709 seats and 567 standing places. It is equipped with a subtitle system that makes it possible to read the libretto in several different languages during the performance.
