His father, Gyula Harangozó Sr., was a choreographer and ballet director; his mother Irén Hamala was a ballet mistress. Gyula Harangozó became an Austrian citizen in 1984.
Gyula Harangozó trained as a dancer at the National Ballet Institute in Budapest and at the Moscow Institute for Choreography.
From 1976 until 1983 he was a member of the Hungarian State Opera Ballet, where he was made solo dancer in 1978. Among the most talented dancers of his generation, he has won prizes at international competitions in Moscow and Tokyo. From 1981 until 1988 he appeared as soloist as well as guest artist at the Bavarian State Opera. He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1982 as Prince Florimund in Rudolf Nurejev's Sleeping Beauty; in the same year he became a Soloist in the Vienna State Opera Ballet; from 1985 to 1991 he was made Principal Soloist. His countless guest performances worldwide include appearances with the Bolschoi Ballet in Moscow and the American Ballet Theatre in New York. In 1996, after successfully working in the field of ballet management, Gyula Harangozó was appointed Ballet Director of the Hungarian State Opera. Thus he took over the management of one of the leading companies on the international ballet scene and, through careful attention to the existing repertoire as well as introducing works of famous choreographers, improved its already excellent reputation.
