The State Opera Museum
Current exhibition: Ludwig Minkus (1826-1917): Wiener, Weltstar, Don Quixote
March 19th - June 1st, 2014
The State Opera Museum documents the story of the opera house in the exhibition "Vienna State Opera - 140 years of the house on the ring: 1869 - 2009 ". Important events such as premieres, first performances, major productions, and revolutionary musical interpretations are memorialized with historical costumes, stage designs, programs and other documents. This exhibition recounts the history from the first director of the new opera house, Franz Freiherr von Dingelstedt, up to the present.
Particular attention is given to the singers who were significant in shaping the artistic profile of the opera house. On loan to the museum are artifacts that give this part of the exhibition a very personal face, such as the well-known Erika Köth chain and a mosaic of the singer Christl Goltz. The curator of the exhibition is Therese Gassner.
SIEMENS Austria developed three data terminals to inform viewers of the casts of all the performances since November 1955. In addition, photographs of all the sets since 1955 can be viewed. An extension is planned for the years 1869 to 1955.
CDs, DVDs, photos, books, and merchandise are available for purchase in the information center in the foyer, which is operated by the Arcadia Opera Shop.
